Short but important blog today. But first a quick announcement... I will soon be adding interviews or as I would call them, conversations. I plan to get insights from a wide variety of people, former coworkers, mentors, teachers, instructors, specialists, recognized experts etc. Folks who have and continue to teach. Many of these interviews will be exclusive to this platform. All feeding into my overall theme here at biologistbarlow- personal responsibility and passion! Living our best life!

Today I wanted to do a quick blog on anxiety. Seems especially relevant in our times. Let's look at if from this quote-

"Today I escaped from anxiety. Or no, I discarded it, because it was within me, in my own perceptions- not outside." Marcus Aurelius

This is a great reminder from Marcus that all of our anxiety is created by us... it's an inside job. For me I work to remember this.

A first step I have learned when anxious about something is to ask "Is this real?" Often that is enough... since most of the awful things we construct in the mind never come to fruition. However if indeed it is real the second question is "what is the worst that can happen?". Often even the worst is not really that bad.

Finally if I am still anxious I ask if it will even matter in a year? Will I even remember this?

Recognizing we create most

anxiety and we can also control it is very powerful. Like any exercise it takes practice... looking at the pull up bar and not trying will guarantee you no improvement at pull ups... but facing it... trying, failing, trying, failing, trying, failing, trying....then some success!

Try the 3 step process next time you feel anxious-

  1. Recognize it and own it as your creation

  2. Is it even real?

  3. What is the worst that can happen and will I even remember it in a year?

How do you get to Carnegie Hall... practice, practice, practice.
